mike tyson life is beautiful quote

7. “Celebrate small victories. Although they may not yet count as your big comeback, these will help re-establish your self-esteem and empower you to take on the challenges that lie ahead.” – Salma El-Shurafa

The boxing scenes in “Mike” are highly stylized, as if the people behind “Mike” recognized they couldn’t possibly fully convey Tyson’s ferocity in the ring. Fans would be better served spending days watching YouTube clips of the actual Tyson. The bloody mouthpieces flying across the screen are more akin to a John Woo film than Million Dollar Baby. For example, viewers are thrust into the Douglas bout after a hard jumpcut from Tyson in a hotel suite, surrounded by naked women, partying in Tokyo instead of training. The champion holds a glass of liquor while wearing a tiger-striped robe—the same playboy outfit he dons when he’s felled by Douglas’ knockout blows. This isn’t the pseudo-realism of the original Rocky or Creed, or the recreated chaos of Raging Bull.

Corbin-Miller is quick to point out that “the belief in Mike and vitriol directed at Desiree” wasn’t limited to Black people. Much of the general public took Tyson’s side. “But I believe it was the long, reprehensible history of Black men being falsely accused of rape in order to brutalize, incarcerate and murder them that influenced the majority of Black people to rally around Mike,” she says. “Mike was also one of a much smaller pool of A-list Black celebrities than we have today. To tear Mike Tyson off his heroic pedestal was, for many, a personal affront. Unfortunately, Desiree Washington, a Black woman, didn’t receive nearly as much unconditional public support.”

Tyson frequently ran into trouble with police over his petty criminal activities, and by age 13, he had been arrested more than 30 times. His bad behavior landed him in the Tryon School for Boys, a reform school in upstate New York. At Tryon, Tyson met counselor Bob Stewart, who had been an amateur boxing champion. Tyson wanted Stewart to teach him how to use his fists. Stewart reluctantly agreed, on the condition that Tyson would stay out of trouble and work harder in school.

So, to help safe guard that idea and ethos that has fueled economic engine of the U.S.A since 1931, we’re publishing this handful of American Dream quotes. Our hope, is that they continue to give hope and inspiration to the millions of Americans who still value and cherish the idea that we all have an inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

And then there was this comment, “I was recently stuck at a small airport with about 50 people, maybe more. The lady sitting next to me quietly called a nearby pizza place and ordered a bunch of huge pizzas for everyone, including TSA. Sometimes ordinary people do extraordinary things.” For real.

“Life has beat me into submission. Life was tougher than me so I’m trying to go the other way now… I’m committed and living the other way,” Tyson said. “I learned gratitude. This is what I learned from life kicking my ass. I learned gratitude.”

Under lead defense lawyer Vincent J. Fuller’s direct examination, Tyson claimed that everything had taken place with Washington’s full consent and he claimed not to have forced himself upon her. When he was cross-examined by lead prosecutor Gregory Garrison, Tyson denied claims that he had misled Washington and insisted that she wanted to have sex with him. “In a misguided attempt to show that Washington must have known that Tyson wanted sex, the defense called witness after witness to testify about their client’s lewd remarks and crude behavior during his encounters with the Miss Black America contestants, and even with Washington herself.” Former attorney Mark Shaw argued that Tyson’s “case was mishandled, citing a jury-selection process that allowed a conservative ex-Marine to become foreman, a defense “strategy” of making Tyson look as bad as possible, and a disastrous decision to allow the defendant to testify at the grand jury hearing, the trial, and his sentencing.”

In his prime, the 5-foot-10 Tyson generally competed at just under 220 pounds. His day-to-day weight became much higher after retirement. He revealed in November 2020 he had lost around 100 pounds, thanks to a new vegan diet and a lot of time on a treadmill, ahead of an exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr.
